Fascinating photo by Jessica Bruah

I've been mesmerised by this photo for a few weeks- apart from the fact that it's just quite beautiful, the story fascinates me. Is she going to burn the house down before she runs away? Why? And most importantly, where are her shoes? A girl can't escape effectively for long in bare feet.

Garden delights

Impossible to resist the joys of my late Spring vege garden right now- all I want to do is drift around snapping shots of the new growth and blossoms. We have had a wonderful amount of rain so far this season- certainly compared to the last 10 years, and everything is looking so happy and hydrated!
It may seem crazy to those who have more than enough rainfall, but the joy of it is intense for those of us who year after year have had to watch the soil dry out and our beloved veges struggle to hold their heads up!

Afternoon

How beautiful is my new butterfly chair cover? With the extreme heat we've been getting lately (and it's not even officially Summer yet!) this chair has been getting a real work-out.
The tomatoes appear to be loving it (the heat that is, not the butterfly chair), but who knows, maybe tomatoes appreciate good design too? They would certainly appreciate the colour.
(For those of you who have been to my house and think there is something wong with this image, it's because as a ttv shot it's reversed, and I kind of liked it this way so I didn't flip it, who says I'm backwards?)

Van Gogh

Found this fascinating series of letter sketches by Van Gogh on the wonderful Bibliodyssey blog...was he really crazy? Seems pretty sane to me.

"The feeling for and love of nature always strike a chord sooner or later with people who take an interest in art. The duty of the painter is to study nature in depth and to use all his intelligence, to put his feelings into his work so that it becomes comprehensible to others.

But working with an eye to saleability isn’t exactly the right way in my view, but rather is cheating art lovers. The true artists didn't do that; the sympathy they received sooner or later came because of their sincerity. I know no more than that, and don't believe I need to know any more."

Parsonage garden with trees in blossom

To Theo from Nuenen
April 1884 [444]

"I send you herewith a croquis of a painting I’m working on with some others — this is an effect of trees in blossom in the late afternoon. [..]

You mustn’t, whatever you do, think that I have great expectations regarding the appreciation of my work — I believe one must be satisfied if one gets to the point where one can persuade a few people of the soundness of what one is striving for and is understood by them, without exaggerated praise.

And the rest is a matter of, if something comes of it so much the better, but something that one should even think about as little as possible. But still I believe the work has to be seen, precisely because the few friends can settle out from the stream of passers-by. One doesn’t have to be guided by what the majority say or do, though."

Object of Desire

I have an old Polaroid camera (and I mean 'old' not one of the pretty new ones they put out just before folding completely but one I inherited from my wonderful camera benefactor- my stepfather) and I felt quite sad, but not surprised when the film became completely extinct. So...imagine my joy when the indispensable photojojo folk emailed me their newsletter about this little beauty...The Fuji Instax Instant Camera... ta da!
A new little camera that prints instantly...sigh, I want one..and I will get one! Of course the film is fairly expensive (just like the old Polaroid film) and the prints are teeny tiny- about business card size- but somehow that only adds to the appeal for me. One woman's gimmick is another woman's "ART"...right?
